Today we have a really big, exciting and happy announcement to make! Julie Montagu (@theflexifoodie) is coming to FitFest Oxford! If you are reading this article, we could almost guarantee that you know who Julie is and came across some of her insanely flexible yoga poses and thought ‘Oh, wow! Is that even possible?’.  Yes, it is!

Still to date, although we’ve known about Julie for a while now, we react like that when we get a pop up from Julie’s Instagram, in fact, it happened on our last FitFest Oxford team meeting!

But for those who don’t know her yet, Julie Montagu is one of London’s top yoga and nutrition teachers, was recently named one of the Top 10 Holistic Health Icons in the world and one of Britain’s most inspiring women! She is also the author of three international best-selling books: Superfood, Eat Real Food and Superfoods, Superfast. And the founder of Julie Montagu School of Yoga, for those wanting to become yoga instructors. Busy busy lady!

We asked Julie a couple of questions so that we could give you a nice idea of the amazing woman you are going to meet at FitFest Oxford. Just a little heads up: anytime you read something from or about Julie, speak to her or see her videos, you will feel empowered by her optimism and positivism!

Julie, what are your strongest values and how are they embodied in your day to day activities?

Compassion, optimism and positivity! I always want to make sure that the students that I teach and the people closest to me know that I understand that each of us, myself included, are many times going through difficult times and the best you can offer anyone is compassion. I think being brought up in America, has ingrained in me an optimistic and positive outlook on life and really and hurdles that I face. I believe that there is a silver lining in every life experience, even the very painful ones and that something wonderful will come out of it eventually.

What were your reasons to start practising Yoga? How long have you been practising?

I started practising yoga because I had such low self-esteem about myself! And I decided to become a teacher because yoga makes me feel good about myself and the reason I teach yoga is to make sure that my students don’t feel as bad about themselves as I’ve felt about myself in the past.

If you had to convince someone that does not particularly look after their health to do otherwise, what would you initially say to motivate that person to learn about self-care concepts?

I’d say that the longest relationship you have in your life is with yourself.  We must all become our own best friend and that starts by taking care of ourselves.

How did you decide to come up with your own yoga method, Montagu Yoga?

After years of practising dynamic vinyasa flow, Dharma yoga and now recently Mandala flow – I started to incorporate all 3 styles into my sequencing and came up with a Yoga that combines all 3 together in a fun, interesting and physical way! Thus, Montagu Yoga!

What can people expect from you at FitFest Oxford?

Energy – a lot of energy! Energy in my yoga, cooking demos and talks!  I want to motivate people to go out and do what makes them come alive!

As soon as we launch the ticket sales, please get yours because as Cosmopolitan said: ‘Among London’s taut-buttocked set, the name Julie Montagu is talked about with the sort of reverence reserved for the Dalai Lama. Her Sunday class in SW3 gets so packed that she often teaches standing on a radiator. ’
